Eleftherios Venizelos. Arguably, the greatest orator, and political mind of Greece and Europe in his time, the greatest Hellenic statesman since Pericles. His 1910 speech, in Athens, was one of the greatest oratoric achievements of the 20th century:
"I do not promise from one day to the next the Government will inaugurate the Golden Age. As the malady is serious the treatment will be long. What I promise is that the treatment will be radical and effective.
The first duty of the politician is to sacrifice his personal interests and those of his party to the general interests of his country. It is also his duty to speak always the truth, to great and small, without bothering about the displeasure this loyalty may provoke."
